Legend of the Nags Head Nag 

The popular legend is that Nags Head got its name because early inhabitants would tie a lantern around a horse's neck and lead it up and down the dunes at night, tricking ships into running aground on the shoals. However, it's more likely that the name came from a similar place name in England, and the "pirate" story is more of a romantic tale or a misinterpretation of how the area was used.
